Councillors in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge have this week approved a raft of new measures to increase road safety in the area.
At a meeting on Monday night (September 4th), town councillors approved two new pedestrian crossings.
County Councillor John Woodman unveiled proposals for a new crossing outside Highbridge’s Churchfield School in Burnham Road, pictured below.
“A safe crossing has been needed here for years – the lolly pop man does a great job but a proper crossing would hugely help to increase safety,” he said.
Town councillors voted in favour of giving their support to the project to build a crossing outside the school.
Separately, a new crossing was also approved for Highbridge’s Market Street near the One Stop Shop.
The proposal was outlined by Highbridge Chamber of Trade Chairman Mike Murphy, pictured top, who said it would a “great boost for shoppers and would not reduce the number of parking spaces in Market Street.”
The scheme was given the support of Cllr Woodman and approved by town councillors.
And further proposals came from Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton, who proposed new flashing 20mph speed warning signs outside King Alfred School to increase safety for students crossing the road at busy times of the day.
He explained that the part-time illuminated signs would draw motorists’ attention to road speed outside the school. It was unanimously supported by town councillors.
