Highbridge youngster wins competition to switch-on Xmas lights

-

Highbridge youngster Ruby Newell has officially switching on a Bridgwater garden centre’s Christmas lights after being nominated in a competition as a birthday surprise.

The 10-year-old started Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre’s countdown to Christmas by flicking the switch this week.

Norma Moore, General Manager of Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre near Bridgwater, said: “We were thrilled that Ruby was able to join us to switch on our Christmas lights.”

“We launched a search for a child to be our VIP and help us with our official switch-on in October. We asked parents and guardians to nominate deserving candidates and Ruby was picked as our winner.”

Ruby, who celebrated her 10th birthday the following day was nominated by her stepfather, Nick Selway.

Nick said: “It was Ruby’s birthday recently and I thought it would be wonderful if she had the chance to switch on the lights at the garden centre. She is a big Christmas fan so I thought it would be the icing on the cake for her special birthday.”

Ruby also received a Christmas gift and afternoon tea for four people in the garden centre’s restaurant.
