40 tonnes of new sand was added onto Burnham-On-Sea beach on Friday (May 14th) in a bid to replace sand that has been swept away during recent weeks.
Contractors working for Sedgemoor District Council used tractors and diggers to spread the new material onto the beach at the northern end of The Esplanade, as pictured here.
Burnham’s Resort Manager, Graham Newing, confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com that the work was underway, and played down concerns about erosion.
“It’s the nature of our coastline that we have to replace sand every now and then,” he said.
“We’ve brought in 40 tonnes of new sand from Dunball today, which has been spread around the Allandale Road and Maddock’s Slade areas.”
The work follows a series of high tides in recent weeks when sand has been washed away, exposing large parts of the walls at several beachfront properties.
Burnham-On-Sea.com was first to report in March how one Burnham resident had raised concerns about the amount of sand being washed off the town’s beach – he warned that the problem could worsen with the removal of the boating pool, which was recently demolished by Sedgemoor District Council.
