Council tax scam warning issued in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge

-

Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge residents have this week been warned to be on the alert for an email scam relating to Council Tax refunds.

Some residents have been receiving an email, purporting to be from the Tax Office at HMRC saying that they are due for a council tax refund and to email their personal details.

However, a spokesperson for Sedgemoor District Council told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Many scams are highlighted to the Council and we try to inform residents when they are brought to our attention because, ultimately, it is residents who may lose out.”

“If you are struggling to pay your Council Tax bill and need help, speak with a member of the Council Tax Team on 0300 303 7800 who will be able to offer help and advice.”

“Our friendly staff in Sedgemoor Direct are aware of a high number of scam calls to residents and are happy to help you.”

The council says those who have given over personal details, we would advise you to call the Police straight away on 101 and report the matter. The Police will also direct you to the Action Fraud helpline on 0300 123 2040.
