Burnham-On-Sea town councillors approve banning use of sky lanterns

-

A ban on sky lanterns being launched from Town Council properties in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge looks set to be introduced following a debate this week.

Councillors have approved proposals to ban the use of the controversial lanterns amid safety and environmental concerns.

Town Clerk Tatiana Cant told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This would mainly affect the Town Council’s three cemeteries in Burnham and Highbridge, although we are hoping that Sedgemoor District Council will also put a similar ban in place to cover areas where balloon/lantern releases are most likely, such as the beach, Apex Park, Manor Gardens and Marine Cove.”

“The lanterns are being banned as they pose a risk to livestock, create fires, and the lanterns can be mistaken as safety flares.”

Members of the Town Council’s Policy and Finance Committee debated the issue this week and approved the ban. The final decision still needs to be ratified by the Full Council at its next meeting.
