A rarely-seen winter visitor in Burnham-On-Sea has been causing a flap among bird watchers this week.
This Snow Bunting has been photographed on the town’s beach on several days.
The birds are scarcely seen in Somerset during the winter, usually spending their time on coastal sites in Scotland and eastern England between late September and March.
Photographer James Packer, who took these shots, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “They’re not rare, but are scarce winter visitors to Somerset. We usually get a small number each year.”
“At the beginning of November there were two together in the Axe Estuary at Brean.”
“They breed in Scandinavia and Greenland, which is where most of the wintering population in the UK come from, though very small numbers do nest in Scotland. They are often tame, and with care can sometimes be closely approached.”
