A swan that flew into a car, smashing its windscreen, caused further chaos by landing on the M5 motorway near Burnham-On-Sea on Tuesday (June 7th).

A lane of the southbound motorway at junction 23 was shut by the police and the Highways Agency, as shown in this dashcam video footage.

Although dazed by its crash landing, the bird appeared to be unfazed and sat in the middle of the fast lane, oblivious to the danger it was putting itself in.

Wildlife carers from Secret World Wildlife Rescue were called to help it, and the charity’s Nicola Round told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The swan flew into a car, smashing its windscreen, then landed on the motorway.”

“The traffic was stopped so that our volunteer could safely retrieve it, but it unfortinately it flew off before we could capture it. It certainly left a trail of trouble!”

Highways Agency spokeswoman Rachel Whitelock told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We dealt with the swan jointly with Avon and Somerset Police and put in place a lane 3 closure while a member of staff from Secret World tried to recover the swan.”

The motorway fully re-opened a short time later once the swan had flown off.

There was light rain falling in the area at the time, hence the blurry dashcam images seen here.
