Burnham-On-Sea tennis club’s festival proves a hit with young players

-

Over 20 young tennis players in Burnham-On-Sea have taken part in a tournament in the town.

The Avenue Tennis Club held a festival of tennis this month for junior players at the club, with 26 taking part in match-play and tournaments.

A couple of the club’s mini red (under 8) players got their first taste of competitive tennis with some matches played on a shorter court and with a slower/ low bouncing ball. Organisers said it was great to see the players learning how to score themselves and develop good sportsmanship.

There was also a competition for the club’s mini orange (9 and under) players. Eight players battled it out on the courts for three hours with Theo Clarke emerging as the eventual winner. The standard of play was excellent, said the organisers.

A mini green (10 and under) contest was also held for another eight players. The standard was exceptional from all the young players, cumulating in an emotional final between Josh Proctor and Orange champion Theo Clarke. Every game seemed to go to deuce and the 4 games to love score line did not do justice to the two gladiator, but running on empty Theo was crowned green ball king.

The under 14s and under 18s also battled it out in match play sessions. Head Coach Jonny Horn was even stretched by some of the Under 18 players with narrow victories.

“Playing competitive matches is such an important part of sport and at Avenue LTC we will be hosting more and more tournaments and match play sessions for our juniors and adults in the future,” said a spokeswoman.

The club’s next tournaments will be on the weekend of 29/30 November. Log in to the LTA website to enter. Entry is free to Avenue members.
