Burnham fire crew called to fight blazing row of thatched cottages

-

Firefighters from Burnham-On-Sea were among more than 15 crews from across the region called to tackle a big blaze in a row of thatched cottages in south Somerset on Friday afternoon (May 1st).

The incident took place in Charlton Mackerell, three miles east of Somerton.

Crews worked through the night into this morning (Saturday) to bring it under control.

Two of the three thatched cottages were affected by the blaze and the fire was encroaching on a third.

Incident commander Marc House of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “We arrived at the scene to find a row of thatched cottages alight.”

“The central cottage was well alight in the roof space. Crews were deployed to fight the fire to prevent the fire spreading to adjoining properties.”

“We also undertook salvage operation to save as much of the cottages and the personal belongings of the occupants.”

A welfare unit and crew from Burnham-On-Sea attended the incident. A spokesman for the fire service said there had been no reports of any injuries.
