Firefighters from Burnham-On-Sea, Bridgwater and Cheddar were called to tackle a large hay field on fire on Saturday afternoon (July 12th) after the blaze broke out in the soaring temperatures.
Fire crews were called at 1.42pm to the field next to Wick Road between Brean and Lympsham, pictured below.
“Crews arrived on scene to find approximately two acres of land alight,” said a spokesperson.
“The dry conditions—made worse by recent hot weather—contributed to the spread of the fire.”
“Firefighters used two hose reel jets and beaters to bring the blaze under control.”
Although the fire was extinguished successfully, crews remained at the scene to damp down hotspots and prevent reignition.
Passers-by reported seeing plumes of smoke from nearby roads as crews arrived in Wick Road.
Local residents praised the swift response of the fire crews. “It could have been much worse, especially with how dry it’s been lately,” said one resident.
