The firm that provides water supplies to the Burnham-On-Sea area has this week reassured customers that it has no plans to restrict supplies despite one of the driest winters on record.
Across the West country, reservoir levels and rainfall are down by up to a fifth on average.
Since records began almost 130 years ago, only the winters of 1892 and 1920 have seen less rainfall than this winter.
However, Bristol Water says Cheddar Reservoir, which supplies Burnham-On-Sea, is 96 per cent full due to improved water management measures.
The firm’s spokesman Jeremy Williams said: “There are no drought or hose pipe bans predicted. We haven’t got the same problems that other areas of the country have but we encourage people to be sensible with their water use.”
In recent days, national press reports have said the lack of rain over the past winter had caused the underground water table to drop significantly in some areas to below the levels recorded before the 1976 drought.
