Two new homes will be built on a Burnham-On-Sea housing estate despite objections from the town council and local residents.
Sedgemoor District Council has this week granted permision for the pair of new homes on land adjacent to 9 Winchester Road, pictured right.
The decision has come despite the town council registering “very strong objections” about the application. It felt the scheme represented an over-development of the site and that the proposed dwellings would be “totally out of keeping” with surrounding properties and would also change the character and appearance of the street.
Three letters of objection were also sent to the district council by nearby residents, who claimed the scheme would create parking issues, create dangerous road conditions, and reduce the standing of the overall estate by removing valuable green space.
However, Sedgemoor’s Planning Case Officer Chris Gomm disagreed and recommended that the application be approved by the district council’s Development Control Committee.
He explained: “The proposed scheme does not lead to the loss of land of significant recreational, amenity value or townscape importance.”
“The proposed scheme also does not represent an over-development of the plot and will not harm the character or amenity of the surrounding residential area.”
District councillors on the development committee held a site visit to fully consider the scheme before they gave it approval during Tuesday’s meeting in Bridgwater. The site already had permission for two semi detached homes granted on appeal by a Planning Inspector.
