High winds bring down trees, cut power to 300 homes in Burnham area

Hundreds of residents in the Burnham-On-Sea area were left without power yesterday evening (Tuesday) after strong winds blew down trees and caused damage.

Unseasonal storm-force winds gusting around 60mph swept through the area from 6pm.

50 homes in Queen’s Square, Highbridge were left without power after falling tree branches brought down power lines, as pictured below.

Western Power Distribution also reported 100 homes in Rooksbridge had no electricity, and a further 130 homes were left in the dark at Edingworth near East Brent.

Burnham-On-Sea fire crews and police had a busy evening attending incidents across the Burnham area.

Trees were brought down in Stoddens Lane, which was blocked. A tree also came down in Highbridge Road near to Burnham-On-Sea Police Station, above. Others came down in Marine Drive and Stoddens Road.

One resident left without power, Martin Andrews, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The forecasters predicted a blustery evening, but nothing as strong as this. There was no warning in place from the Met Office.”

Fire crews in Queen Square, Highbridge, last night where police closed off the road as a safety precaution after the high winds brought down power lines, cutting power to over 50 residents.
