Regulars at a Burnham-On-Sea pub have helped break the world record for the largest-ever synchronised wine tasting, it was confirmed this week.

Burnham-On-Sea.com was first to report in May how more than 30 wine lovers had gathered at The Reeds Arms in Pier Street and were among the thousands of drinkers taking part in a nationwide world record attempt at 680 Wetherspoon pubs.

Independent witnesses were brought in to each pub to check how many drinkers were participating in order to calculate whether the previous record of 5,100 simultaneous wine drinkers had been beaten.

Simon Chick, Shift Manager of The Reeds Arms (pictured above), told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Sunday (August 10th): “We’re absolutely delighted to have been a part of beating this record and thank everyone who took part. It’s not every day that a world record is beaten in Burnham!”

A spokesman for JD Wetherspoon added: “Guinness World Records have confirmed that 17,540 people took part in the event, beating the previous record of 5,100 set in Spain in 2006.”
