Highbridge take-away’s proposals for 1.30am opening draw objections

-

Plans by a fast food outlet in the centre of Highbridge to open until 1.30am at weekends have been met with opposition by a group of local residents.

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported last month that Yummies Pizza in Market Street had applied to Sedgemoor District Council’s licensing department to open until 1.30am at weekends.

Malcolm Brooks, Licensing Officer at Sedgemoor District Council, told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “We received eight objections from local interested parties, but the application failed due to a procedural issue.”

He explained that the licensing request had not been correctly submitted and advertised and had not met the council’s strict licensing rules.

Mr Brooks added: “A new application has therefore been lodged with us, and this again requests an extension of opening hours to 1.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.”

Local councillors Janet Keen and Joe Leach recently spoken out against the proposals during a recent Town Council debate.

Cllr Leach told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Market Street is in a residential area and selling take-away food until 1.30am would lead to an increase in people coming and going very late into the night, disturbing local residents. We might also see such opening hours causing public disorder issues. A dangerous precedent would be set.”

Sedgemoor District Council will have the final say on whether the scheme is approved.
