Burnham-On-Sea jet skier suffers head injuries in sea accident in France

-

A Burnham-On-Sea jet ski enthusiast is being cared for in a hospital in France after suffering a serious head injury in an accident at the weekend.

Roy Downing came off his jet ski on Saturday (October 5th) during a visit to the Bordeaux area and was left unconscious before he was air-lifted to hospital.

His shocked family have this week thanked friends and well-wishers in Burnham-On-Sea for their messages of support.

Roy had travelled out to France last Wednesday (October 2nd) to take part in a jet skiing event, the Montalivet Freeride. He was among a group from the UK ‘Tommo’s Dream Foundation’ team (TDF).

“On Saturday, Roy came off his jet ski and suffered a major head injury,” wife Mel told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“He was left unconscious, but with the incredible help of his team, Roy was brought to shore and air-lifted to Hospital Pellegrin in Bordeaux.”

“The team travelled to the hospital to wait for doctors to confirm his condition. Doctors confirmed a bleed to the brain, along with extensive facial injuries.”

“Roy is stable and the bleed is regressing – and he is staying in France to be monitored and to have facial surgery once the swelling has reduced.”

“This has been an incredibly difficult time for Roy and all his family, several of whom have flown out to be with him.”

His family say they have been “overwhelmed by the incredible support and help of friends and family.”

“We would like to thank all of those who have helped, including special thanks to Lynne Robertson and the TDF, the team in France, and the French emergency services.”

A Go Fund Me page has been set up by Roy’s friend Ian Dyke at www.gofundme.com/f/super-roy-support to help support his recovery and his family.
