Somerset Council praises county’s dedicated volunteers during National Volunteers Week

-

Somerset Council is joining charities and voluntary organisations in recognising the contribution that volunteers make across the UK at the launch of National Volunteers Week (which runs from 2nd-8th June).

The Council says it has almost 1,400 volunteers with many supporting services that are important to the county’s residents of all ages from libraries and the environment, to children, young people and health.

Leader Bill Revans, pictured, says: “Somerset has a proud tradition of volunteering to support our communities to provide social, recreational, spiritual and financial assistance.”

“Giving back to our communities is what makes Somerset a special place and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who gives of that most precious gift – our time.”

The contribution of volunteers is often unseen and unrecognised by many, visible only through the incredible impact of their volunteering. Volunteers’ Week gives everyone the chance to celebrate volunteers’ efforts and all they contribute to Somerset’s communities and society.

Council Chair Mike Best adds: “As a Council we recognise what each volunteer does and want to thank them for giving up their time to help others.  Volunteers are the beating heart of Somerset – together you keep our communities alive and thriving.”

Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Executive Lead Member for Communities, said she saw first-hand how volunteers support and guide people. “The support they give our elderly, our vulnerable adults, our children, our animals and our environment is immeasurable and I know that the volunteers also gain so many benefits to their health and wellbeing by giving back to their communities.”

Volunteer roles cover a wide range of opportunities and roles can be viewed on the Council’s dedicated webpage.
