A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued for today (Saturday, June 7th), affecting much of the South West including the Burnham-On-Sea area as well as a large part of southern UK.
The warning will come into effect from 9am on Saturday and last until 6pm.
The Met Office says heavy showers and thunderstorms could be frequent and there may be some disruption to transport and infrastructure.
The Met Office said: “Frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected for much of Saturday before fading from the west during the mid to late afternoon.”
“10-15 mm of rain could fall in less than an hour, whilst some places could see 30-40 mm of rain over several hours from successive showers and thunderstorms.”
“Frequent lightning, hail and strong, gusty winds will be additional hazards.”
The Met Office has advised residents that driving conditions will be affected by rain and surface water, leading to longer journey times via car and public transport.
Delays to train services, flooding of some homes and businesses and damage to buildings and power lines may be likely.
We contacted the organisers of the Burnham-On-Sea classic car show in the town centre, Burnham Chamber of Trade.
They say they are keeping a “close eye on the forecast” and that the event is going ahead as planned, having reviewed their severe weather plan.
“We would urge people to stay safe, to check their journey in advance, and bring weatherproof clothing, but we look forward to proceeding.”
