Several schools in the Burnham-On-Sea area will be partially closed next week when teachers hold a one day strike.
Several schools in the Burnham area have this week sent letters to parents warning them to expect disruption on Thursday October 17th.
King Alfred School in Highbridge will only be partially open and school teachers elswehere are also set to join the action.
The strike has been called over pay, pensions and working conditions by the National Union of Teachers and National Association of Schoolmasters and the Union of Woman Teachers.
Andy Owen, head teacher at King Alfred School, says: “Whilst all efforts are being made to maintain essential services to children and young people, regrettably the industrial action will mean that the school will not be open as usual to students in Years 7 -11.”
“This action is not against the school itself but is part of industrial action organised by these trade unions. Having conducted a risk assessment and having consulted with the Governing Body I regret that the school will be closed to students in Years 7–11. The school will be open for Year 12 and Year 13.”
Education minister David Laws says the Government is working on a fairer pay system, allowing schools to pay good teachers more, and an “affordable pensions system”.
He said: “Strikes could cause a lot of disruption for parents and keep children away from the classroom, something nobody wants.”
