Two-car crash in Berrow’s Coast Road raises fresh safety concerns

-

A head-on two-car crash shut Berrow’s Coast Road on Sunday afternoon (March 16th) – raising fresh safety concerns about the road.

A Seat Altea and a Nissan collided along the busy stretch of road shortly after 3pm, as pictured here.

Ambulance, fire and police crews from Burnham-On-Sea and Weston were quickly on scene to help the seven people inside the vehicles.

The roof of the blue Nissan was removed by firefighters so paramedics could treat a lady inside. “A casualty was trapped within the vehicle,” said a fire spokesman. “Crews stabilised the vehicle and removed the roof using hydraulic cutting gear to release the casualty who was medically trapped.”

A nearby resident said she heard “an incredibly loud bang” at the time of the accident and looked outside to see the collision.

None of the injuries are understood to be life-threatening.

The crash comes after a series of accidents in Coast Road during recent years that have led to calls for a footpath to increase pedestrian safety. A bus came off the road in February, as reported here, injuring two people.

A two-car crash occurred in 2012, as reported here, and a bike collision took place in 2008 as reported here. A 2010 accident reported here saw a bus stop demolished by a car.

Local resident Andrea Johnson, who has long campaigned for a footpath along Coast Road, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We’ve said for many years that something needs to be done to improve safety here for pedestrians.”
