Civic Award for Burnham-On-Sea Lifeboat Operations Manager

Martin Cox, Burnham-On-Sea RNLI’s Operations Manager, is one of four individuals who have been presented with a civic award by Burnham and Highbridge Town Council for services rendered to the community.

As Secretary of the Burnham Area Rescue Boat (BARB) for more than a decade, Martin successfully established a high quality service for protecting and saving lives in the Bristol Channel.

The services, professionalism and reputation of BARB grew in stature during this time, with one year alone seeing 26 emergency launches.

The service was enhanced by £110,000 in donations collected from much of the south coast, and this was used to purchase and operate a rescue hovercraft, dealing specifically with mud and soft sand incidents.

With the completion of the RNLI’s new station and ultra-modern equipment – which has been provided at an estimated cost of over half a million pounds – Martin is now the Lifeboat Operations Manager responsible for a total of more than twenty dedicated personnel.

Martin Cox, Burnham-On-Sea RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, with the Staines Whitfield lifeboatTony Winterburn, Burnham-On-Sea RNLI’s Chairman, said: “Martin is a dedicated person and his award is well deserved.”

RNLI Training Divisional Inspector, Howard Ramm, added: “This civic award is a small recognition for the effort and commitment that Martin has shown, not only to BARB over the last ten years, but to the transition from private rescue boat to the RNLI returning to Burnham-On-Sea.”

The award was presented to Martin and the three other recipients by the High Sheriff of Somerset, Mr Sandy Evans, at the Annual Civic Service on Sunday 4th July at St Andrew’s Church in Burnham-On-Sea.

The four recipients of this year’s awards are Mr Martin Cox, Mrs Phyllis Walsh, Mr Jack Foster and Mr Albert Vowles.
