Prayers held at council meeting for family of man who died in Love Lane lorry crash

-

Monday night’s Burnham and Highbridge Town Council meeting paused for prayers for the family of the man who died in Friday’s Love Lane lorry crash.

Residents and councillors bowed their heads as Rev Graham Witts, the vicar of Burnham’s St Andrew’s Church, led the prayers at the start of Monday’s meeting in the Jaycroft Road council chambers, pictured here.

“We pause to pray for the family of the man who died on Friday evening,” he said. “At this terribly tragic time we also pray for the emergency services who attended the incident.”

Friday’s tragedy took place at 4.20pm when a man in his 50s was killed when a Royal Mail delivery lorry collided with him and a lady, who was seriously hurt, as reported here. A pet dog was also killed.

Emergency services were called to the junction of Love Lane and St Peter’s Road but the man tragically died at the scene and the lady was taken to Southmead Hospital.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail issued a statement on Monday, saying: “We are aware of the tragic events that occurred at Burnham-On-Sea on Friday evening. Our thoughts and condolences are with the families and friends of those involved. Whilst the matter is being investigated, we cannot comment any further.”

A Police spokeswoman added: “If you were in the area at the time of the incident and have information which might help our inquiry please contact the collision investigation team via 101, providing the call handler with the reference 5218276435.”
