A police motorcyclist was taken to hospital as a precaution after a crash on the M5 near Burnham-On-Sea on Monday (March 30th) which caused several hours of delays.

The officer was responding to an emergency call when he was knocked off his motorbike near junction 23.

Emergency services were called to the southbound carriageway and police said no-one else was injured.

Two lanes were closed for several hours between junction 23 and 24 with delays backing up to junction 22 at Burnham-On-Sea.

All three lanes were re-opened for a short time before a second accident occurred at around 12.30pm which blocked one lane.

Traffic was already slow in the area due to roadworks and a 50mph speed restriction near junction 23. Queues quickly backed up towards junction 22 at Burnham for much of the day.
