Country music fans pull in the funds for Burnham-On-Sea hovercraft

Country and Western music fans pulled Burnham’s Spirit Of Lelaina hovercraft through the streets of Brean on Monday October 3rd to help raise funds for the life-saving rescue service.

To the sound of cheers from the crowds of onlookers along the 1.5 mile route, the fun-loving group helped to raise much-needed cash.

They also stopped off at eight pubs along the Coast Road during the village’s annual Country and Western Festival.

Fans from across Britain have once again flocked to Brean for the annual country extravaganza, and the hovercraft pull’s organisers Barbara Newman and Joan Hadfield from the Chevron Country Music Club said the collection boxes were rattling.

“It is a good cause and when it is a local charity people often tend to give more,” said Barbara.

“The Westerners have raised many thousands of pounds at Brean over the years and are always keen to help local organisations. We all think the hovercraft is an excellent cause.”

The hovercraft left the Beach Bar pub at 7pm, taking in the Farmer’s Tavern, Flaming Jaes, Max’s, Ocean Bar, the Seagull Inn, and Three Acres before arriving at the Beachcomber.

The pull was marshalled by crew members from BARB, the charity that operates the hovercraft. A spokesman said the event had been a “great success” and he thanked the crowds of well-wishers for their support.
