RNLI lifeboats in Burnham-On-Sea were launched thirteen times during the past year, according to official statistics released by the charity this week.

While the number of launches during 2013 was the lowest for several years, the Burnham lifeboats helped 18 people in difficulty, which was the highest tally for several years.

The statistics also showed that the RNL’s new I lifeguards at Burnham-On-Sea and Berrow dealt with 66 incidents, and assisted 70 people whilst also providing essential beach safety information, thereby preventing more incidents occurring.

The RNLI’s crews across the South West spent a total of 10,207 hours helping others in trouble at sea, the equivalent of 425 days.

Andy Hurley, RNLI Regional Operations Manager said: “The figures released this week go some way to illustrating the incredible dedication shown by the charity’s volunteers, without whom we could not carry out our core purpose to save lives at sea.”

“These volunteers are equipped and trained to respond to all kinds of incidents whatever the weather throws at them.”

Neighbouring RNLI stations in the Bristol Channel were also kept busy, according to the new figures. Weston had 42 launches and helped 22 people while Minehead had 22 launches and helped 14 people.
