A special open day is to be held today (Saturday, June 28th) at Burnham-On-Sea’s ’round church’.
Our Lady and The English Martyrs in Highbridge Road is holding a Church Open Doors Day between 10am and 4pm.
Spokeswoman Pat Nicholls says: “As well as tours of the building, there will be displays on the history of the La Retraite Sisters who built two local schools and the first Catholic church in the town, educated so many people of the area, and a display showing the history of St Joseph’s School by the pupils of Year 5.”
She says a number of interesting facts will be answered: “Did you know that the statue in the Atrium of Our Lady and The English Martyrs was brought from France in 1898 by a small group of La Retraite Sisters when they came to settle in Burnham?”
“Or that the stained glass windows were designed and created in 1967 by Michael Lassen, who also created a round window at Durham Cathedral? Or that Frank Foley went to St Joseph’s School? Or that the church is not round, but oval?”
Refreshments will be available. There is also car parking and disabled access.
