Driver arrested on M5 after hitting 122mph on way back from haircut in Wales

-

A man has been arrested after hitting 122mph on the M5 motorway near Burnham-On-Sea as he drove back home to England from a haircut appointment in Wales.

Avon and Somerset Police tweeted details of the incident, with the driver having tried to take advantage of Wales allowing hairdressers to reopen on Monday this week – a month earlier than England.

The car was stopped near Junction 23 of the M5 on Thursday.

In a tweet, the force says: “Officers stopped a car driving at 122mph near J23 of the M5 yesterday. The occupant was travelling back from Wales after getting a haircut.”

“A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs after failing a roadside test. Enquiries ongoing.”

Besides the suspected offences and speed of driving, travelling outside of your local area is also not allowed under current lockdown rules across all four UK nations.

But ministers are clearly wary of people trying to take advantage of the restrictions as they start to change theirs at different rates, with the Welsh first minister having warned the country’s tourism industry earlier this week not to take bookings from people in England who may be looking for an Easter break.

The earliest you’ll be able to book a holiday within England – or have a haircut for that matter – is 12th April.
