New sound warning system installed on Burnham jetty after tragedy

A new audible warning system has been installed at the top of Burnham-On-Sea's jetty as part of a raft of changes to boost safety following a tragedy last year.

It comes just six months after four year-old Dylan Cecil died in a fall from the jetty last summer. His inquest will be held tomorrow.

Large sound speakers have been installed on the lifeguards building at the top of the jetty, facing the beach, as pictured here.

"The system will help the lifeguards to more quickly communicate with people on the beach and jetty," Sedgemoor District Council's Bill Smith told

"It's part of several changes, including the introduction of new beach lifeguards."

Last month, first reported here that RNLI lifeguards would be introduced on Berrow and Burnham beaches over this year's tourist season. New safety signs have also been introduced on the jetty building.

West Somerset Coroner Michael Rose will be holding an inquest into the tragedy this Thursday, February 28th, in Taunton.
