Struggling Highbridge traders will get business rates reductions

-

Sedgemoor District Council is to help traders in the centre of Highbridge whose trade has been hit by long-running major roadworks.

Work to replace gas mains along Church Street began in January and has caused endless queues of traffic and dented the trade of local businesses.

MP David Heathcoat-Amory visited the business owners in February, as pictured, when he saw at first hand the problems.

The matter was taken up with Sedgemoor’s Revenues Team, who announced on Wednesday that a solution had been found.

“The Valuation Office have visited the area and ascertained that the size of the works undertaken and time they will take to complete are sufficient to warrant a temporary reduction in the Rateable Value of properties affected,” council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“The Valuation Officer will process these reductions shortly, which will enable Sedgemoor District Council to issue revised Business Rate bills to the affected traders.”

As first reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com, businesses in Church Street say their trade has been badly hit by the three months of work.
