Historic church near Burnham raises over £3,000 towards ‘critical’ roof repairs

-

Over £3,000 has been donated to a fundraising appeal to enable an historic tin church on the outskirts of Burnham-On-Sea to get ‘critical’ roof repairs.

As Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported here in November, Edithmead Church in Stoddens Lane, known as ‘The Tin Church’, has started a fundraising appeal to raise £8,500 for repairs to its roof.

The timbers around the building – built in 1919 – and the gables underneath the roof need replacing.

Maureen Phillips, the church’s treasurer, has thanked the local community for their support so far – and says the appeal continues to seek donations.

“Thank you all for your generous support to help us raise funds to repair our little church. Since November we have managed to raise £3,000!” she says.

She adds: “We need to keep this little building safe and secure for future generations to use and enjoy.”

The church was built in 1919, and the local communities of Edithmead, Watchfield and surrounding area have worshipped there since that time.

“The congregation has always raised funds for any repairs by holding various events. Since 2000 we have held an Annual Summer Flower Festival, a Carol Service at Christmas and a service is held on the third Sunday of each month during the year.”

“During the Covid pandemic the church was closed for 18 months. When we reopened the building, we continued with our monthly service, and we held a Carol Concert last Christmas. This has raised funds to keep the church insured and pay the energy bills.”
