Highbridge
Bank Street car park sell-off placed on hold
No
decision will be taken on the future of Highbridge's closure-threatened
Bank Street Car Park until March 2009.
Sedgemoor's Corporate Scrutiny Committee examined the council's
capital expenditure plans on Monday (May 12th) and decided the
controversial proposals to sell off part of Highbridge's town
centre car park should be put on hold until next year.
Doug
Bamsey, Corporate Director of Sedgemoor District Council, told
Monday's Burnham town council meeting: "It's only a recommendation
to full council at this stage, but the committee has suggested
the sale should not be considered during this fiscal year to March
2009."
Cllr
Joe Leach, who has campaigned against the closure, welcomed the
news: "It's fantastic that the decision has been delayed
by a year. We just want the long-term future of it secured now
too."
Cllr
Chris Williams told Mr Bamsey that the views of Highbridge residents
at the recent
public meeting about the car park should not be forgotten.
"There
were very strong feelings among the public at that meeting - not
just about closing the car park, but about what would be put on
it if it were to be sold."
