Three new shops give Burnham-On-Sea a recession-busting boost

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s town centre has been given a recession-busting boost this week with the launch of three new shops.

Larkins 99p Store has opened in the High Street, while Giggles novelty shop is set to open on The Esplanade, and a new fashion accessories store, Highly Strung, is also due to open shortly in Cross Street.

Larkins launched on Sunday in place of JPS Shoes and owner Sean Abrahams, pictured above with store manager Julie Simmons and daughter Charlotte, told Burnham-On-Sea.com he was delighted with the first few days’ trade.

“It’s been a very busy opening – there’s been a lot of interest in our discounted products. We’re delighted to have found such a prominent position at the junction of Burnham High Street and Pier Street.”

Meanwhile, Carrie Davies is opening Giggles – a new gadgets and gizmos shop – on Burnham seafront, next to Sunspot Amusements.

Carrie told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We plan to open on Good Friday in time for the start of the holiday season and will be offering a wide range of novelty gifts, gadgets, jokes and sweets. It will be a fun place to come and visit.”

The third new business, Highly Strung – The Burnham Bead Shop, is due to open next Tuesday (March 30th) in Cross Street in place of a former Internet cafe.

Owner Margot Cook, from West Huntspill, said this week: “We’ll be selling a wide selection of beads, plus jewellery supplies and services, to accompany our existing online store.”

“There are only a handful stores like this in the west country and not another for miles around.”

Geoff Shickle, Chairman of Burnham’s Chamber of Trade, welcomed the latest round of shop openings.

He told Burnham-On-Sea.com the news was a further indication of Burnham’s resilience to the recession.
