Photos: Thousands watch Burnham-On-Sea seafront fireworks

Thousands of people lined Burnham's seafront on Sunday evening to watch a spectacular display of fireworks to start the town's carnival festivities.

An estimated crowd of over 10,000 people crowded The Esplanade and neighbouring streets to watch a sparking 22-minute display, which was fired from the town's jetty and beach.

Over 2,000 sparkling shots soared into the air above the beach, accompanied by a programme of modern music.

Burnham's Mayor Cllr Michael Clarke told afterwards: "It was a fantastic show and it was great to see such large crowds come out to enjoy it - it was a superb start to the carnival fun."

This year's display was overseen by Skyburst Illuminations and its spokesman Matthew Tosh said the display had run successfully.

The display was organised by Burnham and Highbridge Town Council in the run-up to Monday's Burnham-On-Sea Carnival. This year's event sponsors included Home Farm Holiday Park, Positive Wealth Creation, Retreat Caravan Park, Beachside Holiday Park, Highbridge Caravans and PJ Harris Funeral Services.

Charity donations were collected by the Rotary Club and army cadets, pictured here.
