Decision on Burnham and Highbridge libraries opening hours delayed

Burnham LibraryBurnham-On-Sea and Highbridge book lovers will have to wait until later in February to find out whether the opening hours at Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge libraries are to be cut.

Somerset County Council's proposed cost-cutting plans will see Burnham Library's opening hours reduced by four hours a week while Highbridge Library's hours will be cut by 3.5.

The county council has this week approved £7.8m in cuts include cutting £762,000 from the vulnerable adult services budget, £500,000 from bus services and £200,000 in library cuts.

Highbridge LibraryBut a County Council spokeswoman told on Thursday: "The specifics of the library opening hour changes were not part of the Full Council's decisions this week - they were approving budget savings."

"The service is currently analysing feedback from the 'Listening, Learning, Changing' engagement programme, and a decision on changes to opening hours is expected to be taken in the week starting 29th February."

The council started its county-wide "public engagement process" on the library plans in December 2015 to gather feedback from residents.
