Two day Edward Elgar festival to be held in Burnham-On-Sea

-

The music of one of England’s greatest composers, Edward Elgar, will be celebrated during a two-day festival being held in Burnham-On-Sea later this month.

The town’s University of the Third Age (U3A) and lecturer Julian Williamson have joined forces to present a Elgar Weekend starting on February 27th.

The classical music project will be held at The Princess Hall. The morning sessions will be consist of illustrated talks and the afternoons will feature the composer’s music, performed by the Bristol String Quartet.

Burnham and Highbridge Brass Band will also perform Elgar’s little-known work, the Severn Suite, which he wrote specifically for brass.

Rod Winfield from the U3A told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Obviously Burnham’s U3A is known for its many and varied activities for those no longer in full-time employment. It now has more than 570 members taking part in a wide variety of activities including language studies, art, walking, barn dancing and scrabble.”

“For us this is quite an ambitious undertaking but Julian Williamson is well known to Wells U3A where he has run similar weekends and he always brings his topics to life with interesting and often amusing anecdotes. Some people come just to hear him speak!”

Tickets for both days cost £33 – or £30 for U3A members – and it is possible to mix the talks and music with individual sessions costing £9 (U3A members £8) by contacting Rod Winfield on 01278 789824, mentioning Burnham-On-Sea.com.
