Burnham-On-Sea.com
launches new RSS news feeds
Burnham-On-Sea.com
has launched several RSS news feeds to enable Internet users to
quickly see when we have updated the site with breaking news.
RSS
- also known as 'Really Simple Syndication' - is a technology
that's sweeping the Web.
Burnham-On-Sea.com
has launched a general news feed to provide you with the very
latest local news, and a separate feed for Burnham-On-Sea.com's
discussion forums.
Once
you have set up a connection to the feeds, which you can find
at the bottom of this page - or by clicking the
icon on any part of the site - you will receive a list of all
the latest stories currently available on Burnham-On-Sea.com.
How
can I receive RSS feeds?
There
are several ways of receiving RSS feeds, and the technology is
moving forwards and adapting very quickly. The main method is
to download a program called an 'RSS News Reader'. You can then
set up this program to receive RSS information from whatever websites
you wish that offer it, and browse headlines and story summaries
that link through to the full story on the website. There are
several News Reader programs available, many of which are free.
See
a list here.
Alternatively,
many Web browsers (such as Internet Explorer 7) offer similar
built-in functionality which detects whether the website you are
visiting offers an RSS feed. The browser then lets you create
a constantly-updated list of links in your 'bookmarks' menu.
The
Firefox browser (Windows, Mac OSX, Linux) will let you do this,
and will alert you to an RSS-enabled page by displaying an icon
like this
in the bottom-right corner of the window. Apple's Safari browser
(Mac OSX only) offers an even fuller service, and other browsers
will probably follow. There
are also some websites that let you customise a list of RSS feeds
too.
