Plans
for 14 beachfront flats in Burnham-On-Sea rejected

Multi-million
pound plans to replace this house with a three-storey block of
14 apartments on Burnham-On-Sea's beachfront have been turned
down by planners.
The
application at 17 Allandale Road would have seen the demolition
of the current property and the construction of new flats on two
floors, plus a top floor penthouse. There would also have been
20 car spaces and a new access road.
But
Sedgemoor planners have thrown out the scheme, with a spokesman
explaining to Burnham-On-Sea.com: "The proposed poorly designed
modern block of flats is inappropriate in its context and if erected
would significantly harm the character and appearance of both
the Allandale Road area and the seafront."
"The
design fails to take the opportunities available to improve the
character and quality of the area."
"The
site is in a seafront location characterised by detached and semi-detached
residential properties primarily of the 19th and early 20th century."
The
planners went on to say that the application is contrary to several
policies in the Local Plan, as well as national government planning
policy set out in 'Planning Policy Statement 1: Delivering Sustainable
Development'.
Moose
Roper Limited, the developer behind the scheme, had claimed in
its application that the proposed building would "make a
positive contribution to new housing needs in Burnham-On-Sea with
a landmark building. This
is a necessary development meeting housing targets on a brownfield
site, which in turn protects the countryside."
