40th annual Burnham-On-Sea horticultural show gets underway

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s 40th annual horticultural show got underway on Saturday morning (August 11th) with more than 500 entries on display.

The Burnham-On-Sea and District Horticultural Society’s show is being held at Sanders Gardenworld throughout this weekend and dozens of colourful blooms, crafts and other items are on display.

There are 10 sections and 133 classes being judged with cups, shields, medals, trophies and tankards to be won.

The Society’s Treasurer, Les Wallis, said he hopes there will be a good turbout of visitors and participants: “We’re expecting a good turn out in all sections and classes, but are still keen to make sure as many people as possible get involved with the show and ensure it is a great success.”

The sections in which competitors are invited to enter include floral art, junior, domestic, handicraft, such as decoupage, hand-made cards, crochet and knitted items, cross stitch and tapestry. People will also be able to enter sections for amateur photography, pot plants, flowers, wines, fruit and vegetables.

Classes will be available for children in two categories, under 11-year-olds and 11 to 16-year-olds.

Entrants in the Burnham Allotment Society sponsored classes will also be showing off what they hope will be the heaviest home-grown onions and potatoes in the area and the longest runner beans.

The show is open to the public on Saturday, August 11 from 1pm until 6pm and on Sunday, August 12 from 10am until 4pm. The prize-giving and awards presentation ceremony will be held at 3.45pm on the Sunday. Admission to the event is free.
