In photos: Cormorant catches the attention of Apex Park walkers

The colourful plumage of this cormorant has been catching the attention of walkers at Highbridge's Apex Park this week.

The bird was perched on one of the lake's 'no fishing' signs on Wednesday (June 25th), waiting to dive in after unsuspecting fish!

A large and conspicuous waterbird, the cormorant has an almost primitive appearance with its long neck making it look reptilian.

Cormorants are excellent fishers which can bring them into conflict with anglers and they have been targeted in the past.

The bird is not rare, but with its breeding areas concentrated to just a few sites in the UK, it is on the RSPB's 'Amber List' of species.
