Angry
Burnham residents to lobby MP over plans for 69 new homes

Over
70 angry Burnham-On-Sea residents crowded into Watchfield Village
Hall on Monday evening (April 28th) as they stepped up their campaign
to halt controversial plans for dozens of new homes in the town.
Burnham-On-Sea.com
was first to report earlier
this month how Persimmon Homes had applied for full planning
permission to build 75 dwellings on land to the west of Lawrence
Close and north of Wallace Wells Road. The company later cut back
its plans to 69 homes amid uproar from residents living next to
the site.
On
Monday evening, the residents decided to lobby Burnham's MP, David
Heathcoat-Amory, about the plans by sending him dozens of letters
objecting to the scheme.
They
will also be attending meetings of Burnham and Highbridge Town
Council in the coming days and have already sent scores of letters
to the Planning Committee at Sedgemoor District Council, which
will ultimately decide whether the scheme goes ahead.
Nigel
Kemp, leader of the residents' action group, said: "We need
as much support as possible to fight this scheme, from residents
around the site, to local councillors, and our MP. We won't stop
until we get the right result."
At
Monday's meeting, residents also expressed concerns about the
strain that hundreds of new homes are putting on public services
in Burnham and Highbridge.
"Many
of Burnham's schools are already unable to cater for new pupils,
because the classes are already at maximum capacity and don't
have enough places for youngsters," claimed one resident.
Sedgemoor
District Council's Development Control Committee will consider
the scheme during the next few weeks, and residents now have until
May 2nd to provide their feedback on the revised 69-home scheme.
