Highbridge
residents' anger as recycling
waste litters streets
Angry
Highbridge residents are calling for action after rubbish littered
streets in the town this week due to overflowing recycling bins.
This
was the scene in the town's Bank Street car park on Thursday (August
14th), a sight that is not uncommon according to nearby residents.
One,
who asked not to be named, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "I paid
a visit to the Bank Street recycling area on Thursday and was
met by this disgraceful scene. Bins were overflowing and food
was all around on the floor."
She
added: "It's ridiculous that people get fined by the council
if their bins are overflowing - perhaps we ought to fine the council?"
But
Colin Mercer, Somerset Waste Partnership's Area Team Leader for
the South West, told Burnham-On-Sea.com the problem is being caused
by a third party provider.
He
explained: "Unfortunately, the recycling bins for drinks
cartons are overseen by a third party which is currently changing
its areas of operation and has also suffered several vehicle breakdowns
in recent days, which is probably the reason for the problems.
That said, we may well consider asking the company to take away
the recycling bins altogether if their service doesn't improve."
He
added that a wider review of recycling sites is currently underway
in the Burnham and Highbridge area.
