Exclusive: ‘Smash and grab’ raider strikes Burnham-On-Sea shop

-

A smash and grab raider fled with almost £6,000 of stock during a daring daytime burglary at a town centre shop in Burnham-On-Sea on Friday afternoon (July 4th).

The stunned shop owner, who has asked not to be identified, told Burnham-On-Sea.com how the man smashed the front window of his shop before fleeing with the high-value products.

Police rushed to the scene, in the centre of Burnham, but failed to capture the man.

Eyewitnesses told Burnham-On-Sea.com they saw the suspect running away from the shop and police are now studying CCTV footage to see whether the incident was captured on film.

The shop owner, who was left shaken but not injured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I’d just sat down in the shop and then heard a very loud bang and saw the man helping himself to my stock before running away. It all came as a big shock.”

Alex Turco, Chairman of Burnham’s Chamber Of Trade, said on Friday evening: “It’s very sad to see incidents like this happening in our town and our thoughts go to the shop owner at this difficult time.”

“This incident is a reminder of why shutters are used to protect businesses in the town centre.”
