In photos and video: Stranded car recovered from mudflats at Brean

The stricken car at the centre of Saturday’s dramatic incident on Brean beach was recovered from the mudflats on Monday (August 24th).

Burnham-On-Sea.com was first to report on Saturday how the Ford Fiesta had become stuck on the beach. Its occupants had swum out to try and pull the vehicle back to shore, as pictured, after it became swamped by the incoming tide.

A commercial recovery service from Weston spent almost 90 minutes on Monday afternoon hauling the vehicle out of the mudflats, as pictured.

Meanwhile, Brean Parish Council Chairman Joan Jackman has this week defended the decision to allow visitors to park on the beach.

She said: “There is nowhere else for visitors to park – holidaymakers are Brean’s livelyhood.”

“The village swells from 500 people in the winter to over 300,000 in the summer and we need the beach for parking.”

Beachwarden Dave Furber added: “This beach is very safe when people head the warning signs and stay clear of the mud.”

Gary Carmichael, the Taunton man who was driving the loan car, said it had been an expensive trip to the beach. Click here for video of Saturday’s incident at Brean.
