Four treated for smoke inhalation after Burnham nursing home fire

-

Four elderly people were treated for the effects of smoke inhalation after a kitchen fire at a nursing home in Burnham-On-Sea on Thursday evening (August 6th).

Two fire engines and two ambulances rushed to Elizabeth Court in Mendip Way at 7.07pm, as pictured here, after alarms sounded at the property.

“The incident was upgraded to a property fire after the fire service found the premises smoke logged,” Burnham station officer Ian Hazelton told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

Crews got to work with two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and a CO2 extinguisher and confirmed that an elderly gentleman was suffering with smoke inhalation. Three elderly residents were also given oxygen therapy as a result of the smoke.

The fire caused 80% smoke damage to the property, 5% by fire and 15% by heat, and although the fire was out on arrival, the property was heavily smoke logged.

Crews ventilated the building using two breathing apparatus, a positive pressure fan and a thermal image camera. An unattended chip pan in one of the flats was blamed for the incident.

Several elderly occupants from the ground floor of the property were also temporarily evacuated while the crews dealt with the incident.
