Residents and police launch
new 'no cold calling zone' in Highbridge
A
new 'no cold calling zone' has this week been launched in Highbridge
to help protect residents from distraction burglars and rogue
traders.
Over
the past months, the Highbridge police team has been working with
Sedgemoor District Council to set up the scheme in Apex Drive.
Sgt
Ian Kennett told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "The scheme prohibits
uninvited salespeople from trying to sell their goods or services
house to house, as some residents, particularly the elderly, can
feel very intimidated and frightened by having strangers knock
at the door."
He
added: "For those that don't live in a 'No Cold Calling Zone',
we would advise you not to use uninvited tradesmen who call at
your door unannounced. Avoid paying up-front and don't feel pressured
into agreeing to work that you don't really want."
"It
is worth using locally established accredited builders, or those
recommended and trusted by family and friends. And it is important
that you get quotes in writing prior to committing work being
carried out."
Several
'No Cold Calling Zones' are now in operation across Burnham and
Highbridge.
