Burnham-On-Sea
swimming pool to remain open despite tile problems
Burnham-On-Sea's
swimming pool will be open as normal this week, despite major
new tile problems that have emerged on the bottom of the pool.
As
first reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com last
week, Mark and
Sara
Cox-Conklin, owners of the Burnham
Swim and Sports Academy, discovered
a
large 15x3 metre area of tiles had worked free in the middle of
the pool.
"The
area has now been temporarily patched up to make it safe, pending
further investigations, and the pool will continue to be open
as normal throughout the week," Mark told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
"We've
found over the last few days that the pool's tiles were originally
set in render, not the normal adhesive and grout that we see on
modern pools today."
"This
means that over several years, the water has got in behind the
tiles and many have popped up. We probably will have to do a major
repair job to replace the majority of the old tiles at some point,"
added Mark.
"However,
we want to do this at a time that's least inconvenient to our
customers and so are simply ensuring that the pool and tiles are
safe with a temporary repairs at the moment while we plan for
the bigger job."
The
pool re-opened last week following repairs to a partially collapsed
pool wall, which happened last
December
when a large number of tiles peeled off the side.
The
cafe, shop and other facilities at the pool are also open as normal.
