Body of porpoise washed up onto Burnham-On-Sea beach

-

The body of this dead porpoise was washed up on Burnham-On-Sea Beach on Monday morning (July 27th) – the second such discovery in as many years.

Sedgemoor District Council collected the carcass, pictured here, after a resident spotted it and alerted the council.

Council spokeswoman Claire Faun said the Natural History Museum had been contacted as part of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs’ policy to deal with cases of beached sea mammals.

A post mortem would be carried out to establish a cause of death and gather information about the health of sea mammals living around the UK’s coast.

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported in July 2007 how a porpoise had been washed up on the town’s beach.
