Couple’s fundraising teas bring community together in Berrow

-

A group of residents in Berrow will be raising a cuppa for charity this weekend when they hold a fundraising cream tea for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

For a third year, Steve and Hilary Cox (pictured) and their neighbours will be serving up hundreds of teas to the general public on Saturday (June 19th) to raise cash for the worthy cause.

Sally told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are just an ordinary group of neighbours who live in Berrow, and have all been touched by cancer in one way or another, and have come together for the past three years to hold a cream tea and raise funds for the Marie Curie Cancer charity. Last year, we served 120 teas and raised £750. This year, our aim is to double it.”

Hilary’s father died of cancer eleven years ago, and they were grateful to have a Marie Curie nurse come and stay with them overnight for the last few weeks of his life, enabling him to be at home with his family.

She added: “My next door neighbour is currently recovering from breast cancer, and despite undergoing reconstruction surgery just weeks ago, is baking the 400+ scones we need on the day!”

“Another neighbour has a 26 year-old daughter who has recently been diagnosed with secondary liver cancer and is currently undergoing treatment but, again, she is determined to help serve on the day and raise funds.”

“And another of our neighbours is a nurse at Weston hospital who sees cancer patients on a daily basis. She too is willing to help serve the teas, despite a bad hip and having difficulty walking.”

The event will be held this Saturday (June 19th) at Newcote in Brent Road, Berrow from 2-5pm. It will also include a cake stall, plant sale, a raffle with prizes including a holiday, a private pod on the Weston wheel and a meal at a local restaurant.
