A Burnham-On-Sea lifeboat was launched on Friday evening (October 22nd) to investigate reports of a ‘suspicious object’ in the water near Stert Island.
An eagle-eyed member of the public spotted the body-shaped object floating along the estuary near St Andrew’s Church and had alterted Coastguards.
Burnham’s Puffin lifeboat was launched at 5.45pm and its crew of three searched the eastern shore of Stert Island with no result, then scoured the lower reaches of the River Parret to the lower lighthouse, again with no result.
Burnham Coastguard Station Officer Steve Bird told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We were called to investigate reports of an unidentified object in the water 200 yards from St Andrew’s Church but nothing was found.”
Burnham lifeboat helmsman Glenn Cutter added: “A member of the public reported an object in the water. Fishermen in the area were quizzed, but they hadn’t noticed anything. We carried out a full search of the coastline, but found nothing.”
