town crier's widow presents special donation to charities
widow of Burnham-On-Sea's late town crier has made a special donation
to the town's two marine rescue charities this week.
Smith has handed BARB and the RNLI £350 following a collection
at the funeral of her husband, Fred.
said: "Fred was a great admirer of Burnham's marine rescue
services and would have wanted this money to go to BARB and the
RNLI. We are very grateful for the services of both charities."
Smith, who died last October aged 72, was town crier for 24 years.
Shirley, dressed in a traditional town crier's costume, rang Fred's
bell during a ceremony outside the BARB headquarters on Burnham
seafront on Saturday morning (April 10th) and addressed those
present with a customary 'oh yeaz, oh yeaz'.
ceremony was attended by Burnham's Mayor and Mayoress, Derick
and Christine Cooper, BARB President Neville Jones and wife Margo,
BARB Chairman Mark Newman, RNLI Chairman Graham Wills, Town Clerk
Eileen Shaw and BARB's Steve Perks and Julie Dean.
